Dear Colleague:

We invite you to join us to a special brown bag briefing on July 26, 2000

Topic: "Gender Equity and the Environment - Reflections from Central America”

Speaker: Lorena Aguilar - Senior Gender Advisor and Social Policy Coordinator
World Conservation Union (IUCN) – Mesoamerica

Place: PRB, Conference Room
1875 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 520 Dupont Circle metro station (north exit)
Washington, DC 20009-5728 at Connecticut and T Streets;

Time: Wednesday July 26, 2000 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.

Please bring your lunch. Coffee, juice, and soft drinks will be provided.

Ms. Aguilar, with regional counterparts, has recently developed nine modules on how to integrate gender into environmental projects, focusing on key elements such as proposal writing, the project cycle, and tools and indicators for monitoring and evaluation. Ms. Aguilar has experience in rural development, archeology, and environmental health and has authored over 40 publications on these topics.

Copies of the modules will be available as Ms. Aguilar discusses their use and implementation, as well as strategies to convince policymakers to integrate the gender perspective into their work. Recently, in an unprecedented event, Ms Aguilar and her colleagues at IUCN persuaded all seven of the Central American Governments and their Environmental Ministers to sign gender policy statements.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, July 26, for what should be a fascinating discussion with a distinguished leader in the field of gender and the environment.
