| Title | | | | Forests and Land Cover |
| Author | | | | World Resources Institute |
| Abstract | | | | Humans have left an impressive mark on the world's lands over the past several centuries. With the dramatic growth in world population, from roughly 1 billion in 1800 to well over 5 billion today, pressures on the land have greatly increased. The need for greater food production has led to a massive increase in cropland. By the early 1990s, almost 40 percent of Earth's land surface had been converted to cropland and permanent pasture. This conversion has occurred largely at the expense of forests and grassland. |

| Title | | | | The Problems of Forest Loss |
| Author | | | | World Resources Institute |
| Abstract | | | | The ongoing deforestation and degradation of the world's forests shows little sign of abating. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) recently published reports on the conditions of tropical and temperate forests with data on change in forest cover from 1980 to 1990.[1] [2] Such data are notoriously inaccurate and often recycled between reports simply because better data is not available.[3] According to FAO, on average 15.4 million hectares of tropical forests disappeared every year over the decade (0.8 percent of total tropical forests per year). This compares with an annual rate of 11.3 million hectares in the 1970s. [4] --an increase of 50 percent. |
