Title: Biodiversity-friendly coffee to help El Salvador
Resource Type: Article
Resource Language(s): English
Author: Corinne Podger
Abstract: "El Salvador is hoping to protect its wildlife and plants by charging a 5% premium for 'biodiversity-friendly coffee', grown in the shade of native plants. But it must be proven that this method of cultivation really does help maintain biodiversity, which is why scientists at the UK's Natural History Museum, like Dr Alex Monro, have been cataloguing hundreds of species on El Salvadorean coffee farms."

Title: CITES Databases
Resource Type: Database
Resource Language(s): English
Abstract: Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Known as CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, entered into force on 1 July 1975 and now has a membership of 152 countries. These countries act by banning commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species and by regulating and monitoring trade in others that might become endangered.

The list contains the scientific names of all animal species listed in the CITES Appendices I and II (as of 18 September 1997), and III (as of 19 March 1998) and, where available, English, French and Spanish common names. Some synonyms of scientific and common names are also listed but no attempt has been made to make these comprehensive. The CITES Database is searchable by Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Species, Common Name and Country.

Title: Coffee and Biodiversity Conservation in El Salvador
Resource Type: Database
Resource Language(s): English    Spanish
Abstract: El Salvador has approximately 10% forest cover, of which over 80% is natural, or cultivated shade cover, for coffee. Shade coffee farms are therefore fundamental to the conservation of biodiversity in El Salvador. This page leads to a list of species collected in the shade forest.

The aim of this work is to promote the conservation of biodiversity by providing the tools, training and information necessary to empower local people to monitor and assess the biodiversity of the forests associated with Shade Coffee farms in El Salvador.
