Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)
Known as CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, entered into force on 1 July 1975 and now has a membership of 152 countries. These countries act by banning commercial international trade in an agreed list of endangered species and by regulating and monitoring trade in others that
might become endangered.
The list contains the scientific names of all animal species listed in the CITES
Appendices I and II (as of 18 September 1997), and III (as of 19 March 1998) and, where
available, English, French and Spanish common names. Some synonyms of scientific and
common names are also listed but no attempt has been made to make these comprehensive. The CITES Database is searchable by Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Species, Common Name and Country.
