    Abstract: In 1997, Central American countries collectively consumed 0.60 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) of energy (0.2% of the world's total) and generated 7.1 million metric tons of energy-related carbon emissions (0.1% of the world's total). Oil is the dominant fuel in Central America, accounting for 70% of 1997total energy consumption in the region, followed by hydroelectricity (24%), other renewables (6.0%), and coal (0.2%). As of 1997, there was no natural gas or nuclear consumption in Central America, and the region collectively accounted for 0.3% of the world's oil consumption.
