Irrigation
potential in Africa: A basin approach released by the FAO Land and Water Development
Division
The NIGER RIVER BASIN, located in western Africa, covers 7.5% of the continent and
spreads over ten countries, including Nigeria.Total
area of the country (km2) = 923,770
Area of the country within the basin (km2) = 584193
As % of total area of basin (%) = 25.7
As % of total area of country (%) = 63.2
Average annual rainfall in the basin area (mm) = 535 min., 2845 max., 1185 mean
The LAKE CHAD BASIN, located
in Northern Central Africa, covers almost 8% of the continent and spreads over seven
countries, including Nigeria.
Total area of the country (km2) = 923770
Area of the country within the basin (km2) = 179282
As % of total area of basin (%) = 7.5
As % of total area of country (%) = 19.4
Average annual rainfall in the basin area (mm) = 285 (min.),1330 (max.), 670 (mean)
The WEST COAST is the region grouping all the basins
draining to the sea from Senegal to Nigeria. It covers 4.7% of the continent and spreads
over 13 countries
Total area of the country (km²) = 923770
Area of the country within the basin (km²) = 101802
As % of total area of basin (km²) = 7.1
As % of total area of country (km²) = 11.0
Average annual rainfall in the basin area (mm) = 1090 (min.), 2595 (max.), 1505 (mean)
The WEST CENTRAL COAST covers 2.3% of the continent and
spreads over seven countries, including Nigeria.
Total area of the country (km²) = 923770
Area of the country within the basin (km²) = 58493
As % of total area of basin (km²) = 8.3
As % of total area of country (km²) = 6.3
Average annual rainfall in the basin area (mm) = 1420 (min.), 2740 (max.), 2 070 (mean)
The identified irrigation potential in the West Central Coast in Nigeria is 100000 ha
according to the national water resources master plan (NWRMP) [172]. The irrigation water
requirements are estimated at 15000 m³/ha per year in the present study and at 10400
m³/ha per year in the NWRMP. Water resources are abundant. |
