The National
Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) works to improve the scientific basis
for environmental decisionmaking. Guided by the needs of stakeholders, NCSE educates
society about the importance of comprehensive scientific programs that integrate
cross-cutting research with knowledge assessments, education, information dissemination,
and training.
NCSE is developing the National Library for the Environment - a universal,
timely, easy-to-use, single-point entry to quality environmental data and information for
the use of all participants in the environmental enterprise.
Within the National Library for the Environment NCSE
provides many informational resources, Such as PopPlanet and the Population & Environment Linkages Service - a
library of online books, reports, papers, articles, maps, datasets, bibliographies, news
and more. .
NCSE works to ensure that users understand the issues of
context and quality control relevant to the provided information.
NCSE works to help diverse communities share information
with each other and communicate more effectively.
NCSE seeks to provide science-based information to
decisionmakers, the media, professionals
working at the field level, educators and students, resource managers, development
personnel and the general public.
NCSE seeks to educates individuals in all communities about
the importance of improving the scientific basis for environmental decisionmaking and the
steps needed to make that occur.
NCSE is a nonpartisan organization that takes no positions
on particular issues beyond promoting a stronger and more effective role for science.
The National Council for Science and the Environment is a
501(c)(3) organization governed by its Board of
Directors and guided by representatives of communities involved or affected by the
relations of science to environmental decisionmaking

The Population
Reference Bureau is the leader in providing timely and objective information on U.S.
and international population trends and their implications. PRB informs policymakers,
educators, the media, and concerned citizens working in the public interest around the
world through a broad range of activities, including publications, information services,
seminars and workshops, and technical support. It works with both public-sector and
private-sector partners.
PRB is governed by a
Board of Trustees representing diverse community and
professional interests. Its activities are funded by government contracts, foundation
grants, individual and corporate contributions, and the sale of its publications.
In March 1999, PRB launched the Southern Population and
Environment Initiative. Over six years, the Initiative will work with developing country policy
research institutions that are examining the relationships among population variables,
health impacts, and the environment (PHE linkages) to help enhance the quality and impact
of their work. Specifically, the Initiative will help researchers develop their capacity
to contribute to policy discussions on PHE issues; advance regional networks for
information exchange on PHE linkages; and produce studies on key PHE linkages. At the end
of the Initiative, the partners will be recognized as sources of objective and balanced
information; of cutting-edge analyses; and of expertise on processes for exploring and
developing policy options and communicating policy-relevant findings.
In order to develop capacity for informed use of
information among key developing-country research institutions, the Population Reference
Bureau will coordinate the development of regional PHE networks. These networks will use
tested communication methods for policy agenda building that include systematic and
continuous networking with NGOs, interest groups and scientific institutions as well as
regular briefings, interviews and meetings with research communities and the press. The
networks will help build capacity through two mechanisms: 1) electronic clearing houses
that monitor moderated bulletin boards and regional electronic briefing sites such as
PopPlanet, and 2) regional seminars that identify research and work in progress on PHE
issues.
Funds for the design and operation of PopPlanet are
generously provided by the Summit Foundation and the USAID-funded MEASURE Communication
, dedicated to providing accurate and timely information
on population, health, and nutrition in developing countries.
